There are traces of crud in some of the protected areas but no notable marks. A very shallow planchet flake on the jawline is the best identifying mark (as struck). MDS, Breen state III. Graded VF35 by Del Bland and tied for CC#2 honors in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes says EF40 net VF25 and tied for CC#6 in his census. Either way this is an important example of the die variety. 1796 S-111 R5- Draped Bust VF25. Sharpness EF40 or slightly better but covered with uniform fine roughness under slightly glossy medium brown and light olive toning. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small spot of very fine corrosion in the field before the nose and a pinprick in the field close before the neck. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state VI, with a few clearly visible die cracks on the obverse. Graded net VF25 in both the Bland and Noyes census lists; tied for CC#3 in the Bland ranking and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes assessment. 1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath VG8. Sharpness VF25 but there are patches of corrosion and verdigris on both sides while much of the planchet is relatively smooth and glossy. The only notable contact mark is a dull scratch left of the first A in AMERICA. Rather glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown and chocolate toning on the devices. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with die clashmarks on the obverse and a fine die crack from the dentils over the bust tip to the bottom of the neck. Graded net VG8 by both Bland and Noyes. 1797 S-135 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Choice lustrous steel brown and light olive with tan faded down from mint color bleeding through in the protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a thin planchet line from the left edge of the L arcing down into the hair under LIB (as struck) and a spot of slightly darker toning at the dentil tips left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. Otherwise this piece is near gem status. MDS, Breen state III, with a small chip out of the die over the C in AMERICA. Most likely from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state early cents. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #62008. Our grade is MS63 as well. A beautiful early large cent. The attribution and Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. The surfaces are dull and covered with a thin layer of dirt mixed with natural oxidation; it looks this cent has not been touched since it was plucked out of circulation. There is no corrosion and the only notable marks are a vertical nick under the E in CENT and a rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. MDS. The bottom of the date is starting to fade into the rim but it is clear and all the legends are complete. A decent example of this tough date, and it should look better following a bit of careful TLC. Our grade is F12 sharpness net VG10 for the dirt and dullness (PCGS # 1443) Estimate Value $18,000 - UP
